U.S. Route 195 (US 195) is a north–south U.S. Route serving the southeastern area of Washington. One of the oldest designations in the U.S. Highway system, it was created in the original 1926 plan. The highway passes two major universities, Washington State University in Pullman, and the University of Idaho, which is accessed by using U.S. Route 95.

The southern terminus of US 195 is at U.S. Route 95 north of Lewiston, Idaho. From there, US 195 travels northwest into Washington and north, passing Pullman, Washington, Colfax, Washington and Rosalia, Washington. The northern terminus of US 195 is in Spokane, Washington at an interchange between US 195, US 2, US 395 and I-90.

Idaho

US 195 begins at a junction with U.S. Route 95 north of Lewiston, Idaho at the top of the Lewiston Grade.

Washington

The highway enters Washington on the access ramps from U.S. 95. U.S. 195 skirts the western edges of Pullman. Just outside Pullman, it intersects with SR 270, which serves the university towns of Moscow, Idaho and Pullman, Washington. Further north, it forms the main street of Colfax, Washington, where it intersects SR 26 then heads for Steptoe, Washington. It crosses SR 23 at Steptoe, Washington. Travelling north, US 195 continues through Eastern Washington farmland, and terminates in Spokane at Interstate 90, and U.S. Routes 2 and 395.[3][4]

History

US 195 was established and planned in the original 1926 plan for the U.S. highway system. When US 195 was established, the highway combined different highways together. In Idaho, US 195 was co-signed with U.S. Route 95 and a short segment of Sampson Trail Y. In Washington, US 195 was co-signed with PSH 3 ED, part of PSH 3 CP, and part of PSH 3. The original northern terminus was in Sandpoint, Idaho, and the route from the current terminus to Sandpoint was co-signed U.S. Route 2. This section was replaced fully by US 2 in 1969.

U.S. Route 195 Spur (US 195 Spur) is a 0.61-mile[1][2] (0.98 km) route that runs from US 195 in Washington to U.S. Route 95 in Idaho. US 195 Spur opened in 1926 as part of U.S. Route 95's original route, which was routed along US 195 from the current southern terminus in Idaho to the current US 195/US 195 Spur intersection and onto the current US 195 Spur. In the mid-1970s, US 95 was rerouted onto a freeway that bypassed the short segment within Washington and old US 95 from US 195's ending to the current US 195/US 195 Spur intersection became US 195 and the rest of the road from US 195 to Idaho became U.S. Route 195 Spur.[5][6][7]

U.S. Route 195 Business (US 195 Bus) is an unsigned 9.8-mile[8] (15.8 km) route that runs from US 195 south of Rosalia, Washington to US 195 north of Rosalia. US 195 Bus opened in 1926 as part of US 195, when US 195 was routed through downtown Rosalia. In the 1970s, US 195 was set onto an expressway that bypassed Rosalia and old US 195 became US 195 Bus.[7][9][10]
